Description
This is the perfect lock-up and go apartment for
holidaymakers who are eager to explore the
many wonderful towns and villages of Umbria and Tuscany which lie within 2 hours drive of
this ancient hill-top village. Perugia, Assisi Orvieto, Todi, Spoleto and Siena are all a very easy journey and Florence and
Rome are achievable with an early start.
Less well-known than its near-neighbours, Panicale and Paciano, Piegaro nevertheless retains its old street patterns and
a beautifully restored chapel outside the walls.
Its medieval glass-making factory is being
gradually restored with tremendous care and
regularly hosts musical and cultural events. In
October, we have the eleven-day Chestnut
Festival with feasting and dancing. During your
house-hunting, you may have found many
Umbrian properties less than well-equipped for the chillier months, but you will be really warm
and cosy in this apartment at any time of the
year.
A splendid palazzo in the main street houses
a Michelin-recognized boutique hotel and there are two restaurants in the centre and one outside the walls. As Piegaro is not far from the Tuscan border, it is easy to appreciate the subtly different cultural and culinary influences that prevail here. Behind the town is Montarale, a huge wooded hill for picnics and walks. On a more practical note, there is a bus-service to Perugia and Citta della Pieve from the bottom of the hill, a bank, post-office daily doctor’s surgery, pharmacy, two mini-markets, a butcher and florist/newsagent. As Piegaro is the head of a Comune there are more facilities than are usual for a village of this size and charm. Perugia airport is about 45 minutes away in one direction and the A1 the same in the other.
The apartment is one of two which share the top
(third) floor of the palazzo (five apartments in all) probably 18th century in origin, overlooking the parish church. We completely redecorated and rewired in 2005 and there are wooden beams and floors throughout except in the bathroom which is completely tiled. There is mains electricity (an exceptional 6kws which allows you to use more than one gadget at a time!), mains water and gas with full central heating, constant hot water and an exterior television aerial. All the rooms overlook the church or the open countryside and there is sun for most of the day.
The new kitchen is large enough for a table seating six to eight people and has a large fridge-freezer,dishwasher and credenza.. There is a tiled open fireplace and pantry containing the fully-maintained boiler.
The sitting-room is completely furnished with reclining leather sofas, TV, answering-machine/fax and music and storage systems. The room overlooks the church as does the double bedroom next to it.
The large bathroom has retained its blue and white tiles and has a bath with fixed overhead shower, basin, loo and bidet. The washing machine is kept here.
Across the landing from the apartment there is a very big storage room with electricity and a power point. It has been suggested that planning permission might be obtained to create a roof-
terrace here. It would certainly be worth exploring this possibility as, on the ground floor there is an equally large but higher storage room, so you have plenty of space.
Altogether the total area is approximately 101 sqm, of which 34sqm. is storage and the remaining 67sqm. living space.
We have owned this flat for many years, together with a house near Spoleto, which is also for sale. We have come to know many of the local inhabitants and, importantly, all the tradesmen and craftsmen that you may ever need. If you do not speak the language well (or at all) we have a housebook containing our accumulated knowledge of the area.
We are reluctantly leaving after more than fifteen years to buy a holiday property in Crete. Our daughter, husband and grandchildren live there and as we get older, we would like to spend more time with them. This is why the apartment and house are offered completely furnished – from beds to bottle-opener!
